Eleven
years ago the management of Lindblad made a commitment to
significantly improve its safety performance. At that time
Linblad's EMR was an unacceptable rate of 1.38. Lindblad management
committed to reduce that rate to below 1.0. A plan was put
together, initiated, and monitored to achieve that goal. The
results of this commitment to safety improvement has reduced
Lindblad's rate to .75 for the year 2000 with our current
goal set at and not to exceed EMR of 0.8.
In
order to reach the performance goals for EMR rating and incident
rates, it was decided that to achieve this, Lindblad must
develope safety procedures written specifically applicable
to the field conditions which our company performs work in.
These procedures were developed internally by management and
the company's loss control specialist.
Because
Lindblad has set such high goals and receives participation
of its supervisors and foremen, it was decided that an awards
program should be initiated to reward them for their positive
involvement and to provide incentives to all other employees.
Lindblad
Construction has set a minimum training requirement standard
for all employees. This training consists of outside the company
training, internal company training, training conducted by
trained supervisors and foremen and training conducted by
Lindblad's insurance company loss control specialist.
Review
of the company safety performance is monitored on a continuous
basis. Areas that are reviewed are: the company safety training
matrix, all accident reports, near miss reports, inspection
reports submitted by jobsite superintendents and foremen,
inspection reports submitted by customers, and inspection
reports submitted by our insurance loss control specialist.
